Mogambo no more ....

Amrish Puri, one of the most prominent bad guys in Indian movies, died a couple of days ago in Mumbai from a brain hemorrhage. He was 72. He began his movie career in 1971 with Reshma and Shera, although he was also in the 1971marathi movie Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe (Silence! The Court Is in Session), and acted in more than 200 movies .... being the premier villain throughout the 1980s, his most memorable being Mogambo in Shekhar Kapur's Mr. India(1987). He also played the villain (Mola Ram) in George Lucas-Steven Spielberg 1984 adventure drama Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Inspite of getting a lot of popularity as a villain, he continued to play key character roles in several excellent movies ... and gave up the bad guy roles through the 90s, playing the hero's or the heroine's father for the most part. His complete filmography is on IMDB.

This is really sad. Growing up as a kid, my younger brother and I used to watch his movies and laugh and laugh when he would make that typical angry face of his while his eyes would swell to a size that my brother and I could never get our eyes to swell to. Thanks for posting this on your blog, I would never have known. At times one feels that all the familiar faces will be around forever...and something like this happens reminding us of the harsh reality. I'm saddened by this, just imagine what the tsumani survivors and their families must be going through. Best wishes.
